Jury Duty

Jury duty is one of our most important responsibilities as Kentuckians and Americans.  Trial by a jury of ones peers is a sacred right of every American and the cornerstone of our Judicial system.  All who seek their day in court are entitled to a fair hearing and we must ensure they are granted this constitutional right. Your participation as a juror guarantees that this important democratic process continues.

Jurors will serve 4 months on the jury panel.

For more information on being a juror in Boone County, please reference our You the Jury Handbook.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Be a US Citizen
  • Be a resident of Boone County
  • Over 18 years of age
  • Hold a valid state ID
  • Not have served on a Jury within the past 24 months
  • Not be currently under indictment
  • Not have been convicted of a felony, unless pardoned or had his/her civil rights restored by the Governor or other authorized person of the jurisdiction he/she was convicted.

Juror Summons Process

Circuit Court and District Court Judges in need of jurors notify the Chief Circuit Judge.  The jury administrator then requests a list of perspective jurors from the Master List maintained by the Administrative Office of the Courts.

A Juror Qualification Form is enclosed with the summons.  Perspective jurors are required to fill out the form and return it to the Office of the Circuit Clerk within 5 days of receipt.

Jurors 70+ years of age have the option to excuse themselves from Jury Duty.  This can be done by checking the appropriate box on the Juror Qualification Form.

FAQ for Jury Service

Can I be excused from Jury service?

Those suffering from an ailment should present a doctors note or personal letter to the Judge explaining his/her situation. If you have a permanent medical condition that would prevent you from serving as a juror, you may request exemption from jury duty.  If you are requesting to be excused due to a medical condition, please attach your doctors excuse to the Jury Qualification Form. The Judge will make the final decision for excusals.

Will my employer excuse me from work?

Employers, by law, must release someone who has been summonsed to jury service from his/her regular work schedule. Employers are not required, however, to compensate individuals for time spent away from regular employment during jury duty.

Will I receive payment for my jury service?

Jurors will receive $12.50 per day by the state.  Checks will be sent approximately two (2) weeks after service is completed.  Please cash checks within thirty (30) days.  Please update any address changes with the Clerk's office.

What if I have a vacation planned?

The court works willingly with jurors who serve and have vacations or special appointments scheduled.

What is the dress code for Jury Service?

Jurors should wear comfortable clothing that is appropriate for the seriousness and dignity of the court room.

**Requests must be submitted in writing on your Juror Qualification Form or by letter attached to that form, not by phone.
